DORADO LIMITS CAUGHT BY CHARTER FISHING BOATS
June 24, 2005, Pam Bolles, Baja Big Fish Company, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:
The dorado are now back in the Loreto fishing area. Most of the boats I sent out today came back with limits of Dorado. They also caught Marlin and Sailfish in the same areas. The water temperature is approaching 83 degrees. The bad news thus far is the lack of floating sargasso to keep them in the area.
One buoy was already set out by Captain Nacho Qunitero of the Marvilita III. Captains Francisco Munoz and Fidel Alcaide Garcia are working on making a buoy now to set out this weekend. Francisco and I will also be meeting with more local captains to set out several sets of buoys in the next few days. We plan on setting a few in distant waters and also a set in closer to Loreto. Today's largest Dorado brought in weighed 46 pounds.
Over the four days the average catch of Dorado per boat was almost two fish. Sailfish and Marlin are still willing to bite. Three or four billfish per day is not been uncommon these days.
Robert Black of Fountain Valley, CA and his sons Nicholas (16) and Daniel (10) fished with Captain Nacho Qunitero Rodriguez on the Marvalita I on 24 June (Friday) and got into Dorado and Sailfish. Daniel landed a 46 pounder. His brother Nicholas helped him land the fish which weighed more than Daniel! The fish fell for a trolled live mackerel at about 10:00 a.m. In total that day they got five Dorado and one Sailfish. The following day (Saturday) their light freshwater bass gear was put through the test on Roosterfish as they were spooled on two estimated 30 pound class Roosters. They caught approximately 5 cabrilla, 10 triggerfish and 4 pargo, many caught and released.
Fishing in general is picking up with warm water moving in. Captain Gabriel Sanchez Banuelos read 82.5 degree (F) water offshore about 10 miles E of Punta Lobos. It was 76 (F) inside the marina at 6:30 a.m. this morning, according to his depth sounder.
Yesterday was another good offshore day and today looks drop dead gorgeous too.
June 16th, 2005 may go down in history as the day of the Wahoo in Loreto. Four Wahoo catches that I know about have been reported and I have photos of two of them.
Yellowtail have come in fairly consistently all month long at Loreto. Captain Francisco Munoz got his client Mike Mattes into two 35 pound class Yellowtail just off Isla Coronado. Boats continue to try this location for Yellowtail. The San Bruno and Puerto Almejas was also being fished for YT but has not been as productive as Coronado has.
The Cabrilla and Pargo fishing at Loreto continues to be stellar. If you want to bring back fish you can bet on catching some of these. The Cabrilla and Pargo are both coming in from 10 to 20 pounds easily. We've been getting them on live bait, iron and trolled Rapala type lures as well as on flies.
Close to shore are lots of Bonita and Skipjack from 4 to over 10 pounds. These fish have been caught with live bait, jigs, lures and flies and are located to our south off Isla Monserrate and to the North off the San Bruno area.
Live mackerel has been for sale at the Loreto marina, but when there are lots of boats going out, they'll sell out by 5:30 a.m. so get there early. I've seen folks catching bait by trolling bait jigs for bigeye. Sometimes this is unreliable and you're better off buying the bait.
Water Surface Temperature Range: 83-73 degrees.
