FLY-IN TRIP ON AEROMEXICO

July 9, 2005, Mark Baker, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Trip Report:

We had a week of fishing in the Loreto and Mulege areas. Me and my brother Bob Baker from Carlsbad, and girlfriend Nicole Venagas from Anza, all left for Loreto on the 30th of June on Aeromexico flying out of San Diego.

When we arrived at Loreto we stayed one night at Hotel Junipero by the mission for 40 bucks.

We then left for Mulege with a taxi the next morning for 80 bucks one way.

When we got back to Loreto we stayed at La Pinta Hotel and fished with Arturo's Sportfishing with Capt. Beto.

We went out fishing on July 4th, firecracker day, and fished straight out from Loreto about 20 to 25 miles, and I hit a sailfish right away trolling a Mean Joe Green Sevenstrand marlin jig on 80# with 150# leader line. The fish weighed about 100 lbs.

We then cut squid and threw it on some dorado we found in the same area and hooked two but lost both on spit hooks. Very disappointing. That was the only dorado we saw the whole time.

We continued trolling jigs and bait until we came across some big yellowfin tuna on a temperature break hitting the surface, so we hurried on a black and purple Rapala, and cedar plug and trolled right through them, and POW my bro Bob hit a 60 to 70 pound yellowfin on the cedar plug. Very nice fish but then they went back down. We saw them again on the surface, but by the time we got there they went down again. I would say the tuna school had big tuna in it some possibly 150 pounds.

The fishing water temperature in Loreto was warmer than Mulege but not much. I would guess around 80 degrees.

A lot of sailfish were in the area, as well as a few dorado, but not much, and if you're lucky you can get big tuna on the temp break. I also heard of some people in town catching striped marlin. No sargassum paddies to be found anywhere though. Live bait as well as squid is very easy to catch.
