PANGA FISHING WITH CAPT. PAULINO MARTINEZ
Sept. 10, 2005, Don Bear, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:
Ray Harper of Lemon Grove and I fished at Loreto yesterday with Paulino Martinez in his panga, catching 3 dorado to 35 pounds, all on live jurelito purchased at the carnaderors.
Two of the fish were caught at the buoy that Paulino set out about 10 miles east of Mangle; both were quality fish.
Thereafter we trolled feathers and bait, catching the 35-pounder about 20 miles north of Punta Lobos. Loreto fishing area water was calm almost all day; in fact, since our arrival on Monday, all we've seen is calm seas. Loreto fishing weather has been oppressively hot and humid.
There are hardly any fishermen in Loreto. We saw only two other pangas fishing yesterday. My boat is still trapped in my garage by the street paving that proceeds at a Mexican snail's pace.
Gilberto Cuevas of Ciudad Constitucion won the Loreto dorado fishing tournament sponsored by El Club de Caza Tiro & Pesca of El Valle de Sto. Domingo held last weekend. His winning fish was a 39.9-pound dorado caught on a live jurelito; Second and third places were 35 and 37-pound fish. Cuevas' prize was $4,000. His captain was Paulino Martinez, which marks the second year in a row that Paulino has won this tournament.
