DORADO STILL BITING OFF SAN BRUNO BAJO
Oct. 15, 2006, Don Bear, Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
I drove down here on Wednesday and Thursday and fished yesterday, Saturday, with Captain Paulino Martinez on his panga.
We had a fairly short day. The sardinas were late coming into the marina for netting, and the northwest wind caused us to come home somewhat early.
Nevertheless we were able to catch 8 dorado, of which 6 were of keeper size.
The day was spent trolling. We had two double hookups but never found a school. The fishing area we covered was a few miles east of the San Bruno bajo. All but 2 of the fish came on sardines. The exceptions came on jurelitos.
Not more than a half-dozen pangas went fishing out of Loreto yesterday. Judging from the empty trailers parked near the marina, there were also at least that many gringo boats out fishing.
Hurricane John caused 4 serious breaks in Baja's Mex 1 carretera between Santa Rosalia and Mulege, 4 more between Mulege and Loreto, and 2 more between Loreto and Nopolo. Some of these breaks require creeping over the ruts. All require serious slowing down.
