MOTHERSHIP ERIK SPORTFISHING TRIP TO BAJA COAST

Oct. 31-Nov. 5, 2004, Dana Kerby, Baja Sportfishing, Inc., Erik, Magdalena Bay, Mexico Fishing Report:

With 13 passengers on the Erik, Gustavo Velez was also on board this Magdalena Bay sportfishing trip. The winds were HEAVY the first two days, 35 knots with gusts to 50 knots, and we couldn't fish much the first two days. They tried to troll, but some expensive lures were lost by getting tangled. They fished the Cabo San Lazaro and Punta Hughes areas on the Pacific side of southern Baja, 18 dorado 40 lb., plus Isla Santa Margarita, 85 yellowtail and 35 cabrilla 18-30 lb. Many smaller ones released.

Isla Magdalena and Bahia Santa Maria near Punta Entrada and Punta Redondo 15 grouper (one was 60 plus pounds) in the 30-40 lb. range. Again, a number were released.

When they finally were able to get to Thetis Bajo they got 202 tuna in the 25-40 lb. range, and 17 wahoo, most over 40 lbs. Richard Duffy caught a striped marlin that would have gone over 280 lbs. There was one golden grouper of at least 35 lbs., which was released. The group had wanted to fish the Magdalena Bay mangroves, but due to a Mexican Navy exercise in the mangrove areas, access was not advised. They were disappointed, but it isn't wise to go against advice like that. All in all, everyone went home with an ice chest full of the prime filets of tuna and wahoo, along with some yellowtail.
