VACATION AREA SPORTFISHING SUPER PANGAS SCORE DORADO ON SHARK BUOYS

Aug. 6, 2004, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Mazatlan, Mexico Fishing:

The billfish average remained at above 1 per boat day at Mazatlan, but the angler action was pretty light this past week, with only 20 boat fishing days being reported.

Overall counts reflected 31 sailfish, (24 released) 17 yellowfin tuna, 23 dorado and 1 roosterfish. Other than the single roosterfish taken late in the day on the return of one of the boats, no other inshore activity took place for the week by the cruisers. However, Mazatlan vacation area sportfishing super pangas were still finding fast action for dorado on the shark buoys and it was truly fun fishing on light tackle, producing easy limits.

Mazatlan Climate: 76-94 degrees, considerable cloud cover and scattered pm rains, and a bit humid.

Sea Conditions: Gentle breezes from the south & southwest, temps holding at 85-86 degrees

Best Fishing Area: The better Mazatlan fishing was at 20-25 miles southwest to west of the marina

Best lure/Bait: The rigged trolling baits were the hot ticket for the billfish and the tuna were taken on feathers with the fish running with the porpoise.
