BIG SAILFISH COUNTS FOR OFFSHORE FISHING BOATS

Nov. 11, 2004, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Mazatlan, Mexico Fishing Report:

The MDM GROUP, booked by Anglers & Hunters Travel, fishing at Mazatlan during early week, reported a catch of 231 fish for 42 boat days, consisting of 138 sailfish, 37 dorado, 48 yellowfin tuna, 4 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin and 2 shark for their 90 anglers.

According to Mike Kannapel, owner of Anglers & Hunters, it was the best fishing he had ever seen for a big group and they will return, next year.

The total numbers at Mazatlan for the week were enormous, reflecting 183 sailfish, 4 stripers, 137 yellowfin tuna, 101 dorado, 1 wahoo and 2 shark for the offshore waters and a total of 73 boat days of blue water fishing.

Mazatlan inshore fishing, both surface and bottom, held up well, with 6 roosterfish for a single panga day and easy limits of pargo, cochitos and mojarras for the bottom fishing days.

Mazatlan Climate: 61 nights to 87 daytime highs, mostly sunny and pleasantly warm

Sea Conditions: Back to very good weather with temps ranging from 76-79.5, little swell and gentle PM breezes

Best Mazatlan Offshore Fishing Area: 25 miles southwest of the Marina El Cid

Best Lure/Bait: Sailfish seemed to be very eager on the rigged baits and the trolled artificials, as the skippers were gearing up for the first day of the Billfish Classic Tournament.
