SAILFISH LEAD FISH COUNTS FOR MAZATLAN FISHING BOATS

May 27, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Mazatlan, Mexico Fishing Report:

Aries Fleet boats fishing out of Mazatlan's Marina el Cid, are still averaging a billfish per boat day. The big turn this week was in the tuna counts that were the best for several months, along with the inshore fishing counts on the roosterfish. Overall catches for 29 fishing days reflected 15 sailfish, (9 released) 14 stripers, (8 released) and 98 yellowfin tuna. Inshore, Mazatlan charter fishing super pangas were doing well with the roosterfish, all being taken on live bait, with more than 30 fish for the week.

Mazatlan climate was partly cloudy, with 58 degree nights to 85 daytime highs. Sea conditions were fairly calm, with gentle surface breezes, just enough to create a ripple, sea temperatures of 77-78 degrees, from inshore to offshore. The best fishing area at Mazatlan was 23-26 miles offshore for the billfish and directly behind the surf line for the roosterfish.

Best Lure/Bait: Rigged baits and petrolero's about 50-50 on the billfish, and live bait on the roosterfish.
