OFFSHORE BOATS AVERAGING ABOUT 1.5 BILLFISH PER DAY

June 24, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Mazatlan, Mexico Fishing Report:

Mazatlan had good fishing for sailfish, with the charter boats continuing to catch a 1.5 billfish per boat day average.

Some of the hotter Mazatlan fishing boats were posting up to 4 sailfish per day, and of course, there were also a few "skunks", too. But overall, it was another good fishing week, both inshore and offshore.

Aries Fleet reported for 28 fishing days that reflected 40 sailfish with 28 releases, 1 striper, 2 dorado, 24 yellowfin tuna and 1 mako shark, and the inshore super pangas had easy limit fishing on red snapper and yellowtail, along with 18 barracuda, 8 corvina, and 6 palometas, for 4 fishing days.

Mazatlan climate was mostly sunny & warm, temps from 69 degrees nights to 85 daytime highs. Water temperatures remain good, 76 degrees inshore and rising to 81 offshore, with gentle breezes, mostly calm seas.

The best Mazatlan fishing area was 22-26 miles southwest off the Marina El Cid. Rigged trolling baits were best for the billfish and the tuna were taken on the feathers, trolling in front of porpoise.
