CHARTER SPORTFISHING BOATS AVERAGE MORE THAN 1 BILLFISH PER DAY

July 8, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Mazatlan, Mexico Fishing Report:

Billfish action remains consistent with Mazatlan sportfishing boats averaging more than 1 per day. The largest fish for the week was a 420 pound blue marlin, taken aboard the "Aries VII", by angler Clay Rabel, Houston, TX.

A few more dorado are starting to show-up in the Mazatlan fish counts and they are long overdue. Overall fish counts for 23 fishing days offshore, reflected 1 blue marlin, 2 stripers, 31 sailfish, 25 dorado and 3 yellowfin tuna.

The inshore Mazatlan fishing action from the super pangas remains red-hot, with easy limit fishing on sierra, yellowtail and pargo. According to the anglers returning on the super pangas, it was an all-you-want type of action, with lots of fish released.

Mazatlan climate was mostly cloudy early week and moving to mostly sunny at week's end, temperatures from 7l nights to 90 daytime highs. Sea conditions were very favorable, with temps from 81-82 degrees throughout the area and mostly calm seas. The best fishing area was 22-26 miles southwest of the Marina El Cid. Most of the billfish are being taken on rigged trolling baits.
