INSHORE CHARTER BOATS FIND WIDE-OPEN SIERRA FISHING
Dec. 9, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Mazatlan, Mexico Sportfishing Report:
Mazatlan offshore fishing action has picked back up a bit and the boats are averaging a billfish per boat day fished.
Overall counts reflected for 26 Aries Fleet Mazatlan fishing days offshore were 20 striped marlin, (13 released) and 6 sailfish, (4 released) 3 dorado, 2 yellowfin tuna and 1 hammerhead shark.
The inshore fishing catches at Mazatlan continue to be phenomenal and the sierra bite is as good as it gets.
Inshore catches reflected easy limit fishing for sierra and very high numbers of releases. Also showing up in Mazatlan inshore counts were good numbers of seabass, red snapper, along with cochitos, mojarras and a few yellowtail.
Mazatlan weather had 52 degree nights to 84 daytime highs, with partly cloudy conditions, but very pleasant, calm seas, water temperatures from 82 inshore and blending to 85 offshore at 15 miles or so. Most of the billfish are being taken on rigged trolling baits. The best fishing area was southwest of the Marina el Cid, 15-25 miles.
