GOOD DORADO FISHING OUT OF PUNTA CHIVATO
July 7, 2006, Wayne Neff, Fishing trip to Punta Chivato for very good dorado action:
I just returned yesterday from Punta Chivato near Mulege, with 5 days fishing that area.
The Dorado and billfish are in and in close, 4 to 6 miles off the beach. Billfish are out 8 to 10 miles off the beach.
There are many large dorado mixed in with the smaller ones. Young Matthew brought in a 27 pounder after a 50 minute fight. He hooked and lost another estimated at 40 pounds. If you can locate a weed patty there will be 100 or more Dorado on it.
We got into a nice yellowfin tuna bite 8 miles off the Punta Chivato beach. Plus there are aggressive squid 3 miles off the beach that will destroy your skirted squids. I watched the squid take down a full sized bird sitting on the water. Never saw another trace of the bird. These squid will take a bait trolled at dorado speed.
My daughters fished the reef in front of the hotel Punta Chivato and landed over 30 fish in one morning trolling black and silver Jointed Rebels on a cloudy morning. They even got a corbina in an 83 degree water temperature.
The water temperature in the Mulege fishing area is in the mid 80s and clean blue water.
Side note, the small store at Punta Chivato is gone. Supplies are available at Palo Verde where the dirt meets Mex 1, or in Mulege.
