NO TOURISTS VISIT LOCAL RESORT FOR THE PAST 3 WEEKS
Jan. 8, 2005, Sam Saenz, Puerto Santo Tomas, Mexico Fishing and Weather Report:
Everything is fine at Puerto Santo Tomas Resort except no one has been here for the last three weeks. This week we had a 40-man kayak group coming to Puerto Santo Tomas, but it was canceled due to the rains.
The rains keep coming and the countryside is beautiful, wild flowers all over, green mountains all along the canyon road. You can see the majestic natural beauty and you can hear the Santo Tomas River roaring while driving on the upper access road from the highway.
The lower road is closed. The Punta China Cement Plant keeps the top road open. Puerto Santo Tomas has had more rain in the last three months than the whole of the last three or four years.
The local fishermen pulled all of their pangas out of the water, as three pangas sank last week. One of the big nets installed for tuna farming is no longer there. Apparently it drifted away. I will not miss it. Puerto Santo Tomas local fishermen are working the lobster and sea urchin, and a couple are doing live fish commercial fishing. The sea urchin and lobster seasons relieve the pressure on local fishing, which is good for conservation. Once the seasons end, there is much more emphasis on panguero commercial fishing at Puerto Santo Tomas.
