JON KAY GUIDES FISHING TRIP BY THE SPORTFISHING BOAT MURPHY GIRL
April 5, 2005, Shawn Gustafson, Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco), Mexico Fishing Trip Report:
On Saturday, April 2, 2005, I hired Jon Kay of Tiburon Charters to guide us on a fishing trip out of Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) on my 24-foot Wellcraft named "Murphy Girl."
We put in at Safe Marina at 7:30 am and caught about two dozen 18 inch sierra mackerel for bait just down the shore from the harbor.
We fished about 50 miles south of Rocky Point and got there just before high tide. We were drift fishing in 280 to 450 feet of water. My buddy Ryan Jenkins of Phoenix, Ariz., hooked up first with a 30 pound pinto bass, or spotted cabrilla, on his first drop. Within the first hour we caught our limit of 8 pound goldspotted bass. Later, I caught four gulf coneys, or baqueta, from 10 to 25 pounds, and several ocean whitefish.
The current off Rocky Point wasn't very strong and the wind wasn't bad. It was one of the best fishing weekends we've had down at Rocky Point as far as weather is concerned. Cruising out of Rocky Point at 30 m.p.h. it took us 3-1/2 hours round trip to go to the 51 and mile reef and 53 mile reef. The fishing water temperature was about 68 degrees.
