BLACK MARLIN CAUGHT BY SPORTFISHING CHARTER BOAT CATCH-22

Aug. 17, 2005, Steve Calvert, Catch-22, San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico Fishing Report:

The Catch-22 fished out of San Carlos on Tuesday with my 72 year old uncle Mike and Jarrod. I have seen three black marlin in my life and 2 of them have been with Jarrod in the last month, both caught on the same purple and black Moldcraft. My new nickname for Jarrod is blackie.

Mike released his first Marlin ever, after 30 years of fishing, a 350 pound plus black marlin, and 1 sailfish. I released 1 sail, and we had 2 others come off after a short fight. Jarrod boated a couple of medium Dorado. What a great day. We fished 275 degrees out of San Carlos, about 8 miles off the coast.

Given that we have some big Blues and Blacks in San Carlos this time of year I like to run a few giant lures in my spread. I use 8 lines with 5 baits and 3 lures. In most cases this year all of our Sails and Stripes have been caught on bait, and most of our Blues and all of our Black Marlin have been caught on Lures. Catch-22's totals to date this year are: 26 Sailfish, 18 Striped Marlin, 11 blue Marlin, and 2 Black Marlin.
