LOTS OF CABRILLA AND DORADO
FOR ERIK MIDRIFF ISLANDS TRIP
Aug. 20-25, 2005, Dana Kerby, Baja Sportfishing, Inc., Erik, San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico Panga Mothership Fishing Report:
I was on this fishing trip out of San Felipe, and it was great!
We caught lots and lots of nice-sized cabrilla. More dorado were caught this week as well.
It was windy part of the time, but we still fished. People came from Pennsylvania, Skip and Sandi Markacs, and Montana, Randy Grohman, to fish with us! Alecia Cornelius and Regina Davis of The Reel Sisters were filming on this trip as well.
We started out fishing near the Asemblea, almost directly across from the top end of Isla Guardia, and then went to Punta Remedio, then Las Animas, San Francisquito, Morro Blanco, Bahia San Rafael, San Bernabe, back to Asemblea, Ensenada Grande, Punta Final and then the Encantadas before returning to San Felipe.
Fish caught:
Yellowtail, 255. There were a LOT of small, 1 foot yellowtail hitting feathers, all released.
Cabrilla, about 580 in the over 5-pound range, and many in the 10-pound range. I personally released at least 20 small ones.
Pargo, 9; Sheephead, 3; Grouper, 4; Roosterfish caught at Punta Final, 1; and DORADO, my favorite, 56.
There were at least 500 smaller fish caught, and among them were brown and hammerhead sharks, MANY trigger fish, which Skip Markacs from Pennsylvania caught on light tackle and released most of them. The rest went into a great ceviche.
One of the highlights of the fishing trip was when Skip and Sandi Markacs were entertained by a whale shark. It wanted to be petted and kept coming back to the panga to watch them and get them to touch it.
