SHORE FISHING AND CAMPING TRIP TO ISLA EL HUERFANITO AREA

Dec. 29, 2005, Ken Jones, Isla el Huerfanito, Northern Sea of Cortez, San Felipe, Baja fishing, Mexico:

I just got back from some shore fishing and camping near Isla El Huerfanito, south of San Felipe. The weather was stunningly beautiful from Christmas Day until midweek. Highs were in the 70's and cool sleeping weather at night.

The Sea of Cortez was a lake the entire time, which of course makes sense since I did not have a boat or kayak.

I caught the usual Bass and Triggers and 4 Spinster Wrasses for the first time while fishing at this location.

On Christmas night at sunset the sea was dead dead calm and I noticed some ripples close to shore in the little bay I was at and went down and threw a silver Krocodile at them and bam, a nice Corvina.

Next cast, another one...this went on for nine casts and nine Corvina only to be broken by a Ribera Cabrilla on the tenth cast and a Bay Bass on the eleventh. Believe me, the fading light is the only thing that stopped me.

The same five species of fish were caught off and on for the rest of my trip and it was fantastic for a traditionally slow time of year.

One more thing: Just when I think I have the coyotes figured out, they surprise me. I was cleaning a Cabrilla at dusk at my camp and then went ten feet away to get the Corvina I had left on a rock for a picture I had taken. I went back to the EMPTY rock and I am sure the smug, and full, stares of some very bratty coyotes up in the hills. They also during the night dragged my ski pole, that I use for walking on slippery rocks, down to the shore just for the hell of it. Never a dull moment.
