TOUGH SPORTFISHING CONDITIONS
IN CHANGEABLE WINTER WEATHER
Feb. 12, 2005, Luis Duhart, Palmilla Bay Sportfishing, San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico Report:
We had a difficult fishing week with the weather at San Jose del Cabo changing everyday. We had some rainy days, some windy and some gorgeous days, but that was not a factor for anglers who went fishing regardless of the weather. The bait was mostly macarela, as sardina were very few and only available on Monday and Tuesday. The rest of the week we had only mackerel.
We had the Wagner family fishing for 3 days and they went the first day for the marlin in front of the Punta Ballena area. About 5 miles off San Jose del Cabo they caught 2 striped marlin, released one and kept the other because the hook was right into the stomach. It was 110 pounds. On the second day they went fishing for the dorado (mahi-mahi)dorado and tuna near the San Luis bank, and they caught 5 dorados of 20 pounds average weight, and no tuna this time. On the third fishing day it was raining and they came back with zero.
Sara Gordon from Houston went fishing on Friday, also with rain. Challenging the waves she got a 20-pound dorado in front of San Jose del Cabo's Westin Hotel, 2 miles out on a green lure. She fished with captain Vidal a 28-foot cruiser.
Some other San Jose del Cabo sportfishing boats reported also marlin and some sailfish mainly in the Ballena and Westin areas.
