DORADO SEEN IN THE SURF AT LOS CABOS

Feb. 18, 2005, John Snow, San Jose del Cabo fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Tonight I went surf fishing in San Jose del Cabo, a routine event. I was using dead frozen sardines. A large wave approaches and surfing the wave is this fish that beaches itself. I quickly made sure it does not get back into the water and I look between the suds and the dry land and there is this enormous 25 pound or so dorado (also mahi-mahi or dolphinfish)) waiting for what he just chased up on the beach to come back into the water. If I had had a gaff, I would have had a real chance to beach him. The species was a fairly easy Identification, a Jumping or Longfin Halfbeak, Hemiramphus saltator, which taped out at about 16 inches! I have read about such things but this was most definitely a first for me!
