WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS ANGLERS FIND NICE RED SNAPPER
TO 35 POUNDS CAUGHT BY PALMILLA BAY SPORTFISHING BOATS
June 11, 2005, Luis Duhart, Palmilla Bay Sportfishing, San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico Report:
We just finished the Neptune Tours/Western Outdoor News event, with 63 anglers for two days. There were 22 pangas and 4 cruisers fishing at San Jose del Cabo, all having fish and fun.
The main catch for the whole event was roosterfish in all sizes mainly, at the Gordo Banks off San Jose del Cabo. The largest one was 50 pounds and there were several 40s and higher.
Some very nice red snappers up to 35 pounds were caught too. One marlin before the event, and during the event, lots were in sight but not biting. Also, there were sierras at the event, about 15 pounds. The whole group caught fish. The winner was Jim Lee from Sacramento, Calif., with the 50 pound roosterfish. Capt. Ramon was the winning captain in the super panga Marisela..
Second place was by Joey Curren in with Capt. Juan "Lobo," also form Sacramento. He got a 50 pound rooster also, but after the first one by Jim Lee.
In third place was Dick George also from Sacramento, fishing with Capt. Gustavo in the super panga Cristine, with a 49 pound roosterfish.
The three winners are from the Sacramento Fire Department.
The bait at San Jose del Cabo was mainly sardines and lisa. Some anglers got lucky at the Gordo Banks, at least the 3 winners. Some tried the Westin area and Punta Ballena with good luck but smaller fish.
San Jose del Cabo (Los Cabos) fishing weather has been nice and just a little windy.
Rod Halperin of Western Outdoor News and Ozzie Castro were in charge of the event and I was in charge of the boat and beach operation.
