HEAVY BOAT PRESSURE AT LOS CABOS
DURING BISBEE'S FISHING TOURNAMENT
Oct. 28, 2005, Bob Lewis, San Jose del Cabo fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
I fished Wednesday and Thursday on my boat, Dos Gueros. We launched out of Cabo San Lucas right as Bisbee's was taking off. Pretty spectacular. Something like 187 boats and most of them heavy iron.
Our fishing was slow. Bait is hard to get, and is tiny sardines about 1 to 2 inches.
Small 10 to 15 pound tunas were biting around Cabeza de Ballena, but that bite shut down.
Locals are blaming boat pressure. We ended our fishing day Wednesday with one, 15-pound Dorado.
Incidentally, we found a group of fishing boats just outside the lighthouse area on the San Jose del Cabo side of San Lucas. As we approached, we saw every rod bent and lot of activity. It turned out they were catching giant squid to 30 pounds or more. We caught 2 to use for chum bait and moved on.
Most boats reported slow fishing too.
Fishing on Thursday, we ran to the Iman bank along with 40 or 50 other boats. We tried every tool in the box, but could not get anything to go.
Again, most boats reported very difficult fishing with a few small tuna and some dorado. There were some big fish reported over the radio for the tournament. I heard an unconfirmed report of a 662 pound marlin yesterday.
