WORK PROGRESSES ON PUERTO LOS CABOS MARINA PROJECT
Jan. 20, 2006, Bob Lewis, San Jose del Cabo fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
The wind has been brutal around the San Jose del Cabo fishing area all week. I have heard reports of some Pargo and huachinango being caught but have not seen myself.
The progress on the new Puerto Los Cabos marina at La Playita, San Jose del Cabo has really accelerated. The second jetty has been started, some docks have been floated and anchored to pilings, and a lot of areas have been fenced off. Anyone who has not been down for a while will be blown away by how fast things are changing here.
I did a tour of the project last week with a friend who works there and was amazed at the size and scope of the project. Honestly I am very sad for the change. The primitive beauty and sleepy pace is being replaced by land speculators and construction machinery. Soon there will be 2 golf courses, 5 star hotels and several hundred estate homes priced in the millions of dollars. Forget about having a camper or trailer on the beach and roughing it for a few days.
The other concern I have is a marina full of boats located 8 miles from the Gordo banks. The 30 mile boat ride from Cabo suddenly becomes 15 minutes. I expect to see major negative impact on the fishery.
So if you want to catch some fish here you better hurry. The San Jose del Cabo marina is scheduled to be opened up to the sea by midsummer and boats will be slipped there right away. I don't blame the local people for wanting the "economic benefits" and higher standard of living but I am sad for a lost lifestyle too.
