LA PLAYITA PANGA FISHING WITH CAPT. JESUS PINO
July 21, 2006, Randy Morishita, San Jose del Cabo, Baja sport fishing, Mexico:
I just returned from another great trip to La Playita at San Jose del Cabo with my fishing partner Maged Rasheed and the bonus was that we caught some quality fish as well.
We returned on Tuesday, the day the transformer blew in Palmdale, Calif., and knocked out air traffic control for several hours, so I guess we were lucky to get home by 2:30 a.m.
Fishing in between offshore storm swells, we landed a nice dorado in the 50 pound class and yellowfin tuna of 70 and 80 pounds, while losing one estimated to be about 120 pounds.
Motoring out towards the Iman and San Luis area in dark blue 80 degree water, you could just feel that the bite was on as the bigger fish took their toll on us with our lighter tackle.
The next day it was Rasheed's daughters, Soryia and Nadia, that filled the cooler, landing 16 football tuna and dorado before 9:00 a.m.
As usual, we fished out of Gordo Banks Pangas on one of Eric Brictson's pangas and as usual, Jesus Pino put us on fish. We heard of some wahoo being caught on Monday when we did not go out.
The La Playita sportfishing panga fleets have nothing but temporary launching spots and palapas on the beach now until the marina is completed, and they have to keep moving as construction progresses. I fear that it is too close to the estuary and the sea wall has to go up another 15 feet to protect against the normal storm waves that slam into this south-facing area, much different than the Cabo San Lucas marina. Anyway, with so much invested, they will fix the problem.
