YELLOWTAIL AND MIXED SPECIES OUT OF DON EDDIE'S LANDING
May 20, 2004, Brad Barron and Dennis White, San Quintin fishing, Baja California, Mexico:
Headed to San Quintin on Thursday 5/20 with my Bros/Booty crew and fished Friday, Saturday, and half day Sunday. There was six of us. Arrived at night to find wind. We stayed at San Quintin’s Don Eddie’s and got settled into our rooms. Great value on the rooms, nice and clean too and they waited for us to arrive as we were late and got there at about 10:30 p.m. Don Eddie’s opened up the restaurant for us and we all ordered the same dinner which was steak!!!!
Woke up on Friday to wind, ugh. This day I was fishing with Dennis White (Killstick) and Nate Smith. Headed out on Don Eddie’s super pangas and made bait very quickly. We had Greenies and Spaniards. We headed to San Quintin’s San Martin island and slow trolled Greenies on the back side and Nate Smith picked up a nice 20lb class Forkie and my bros in the other Panga picked up a Forkie too.
The wind picked up to about 20-25 knots by 9:30 a.m. It was just snotty and the water was very dirty. We decided to fish Calicos in the bush and we had great San Quintin fishing for about 1 1/2 hours and the captain worked his butt off keeping us near the bush as it was howling and our drift was turbo.
We released many San Quintin Calicos and they were eating the Fat Baits, Greenies, Spaniards, and Smelt. We were also getting monster White Fish in 15 feet of water which were fun on the lite gear.
The Calicos stopped biting and the Cuda were extremely thick. Stood on the bow and we were winging surface iron at the Cudas on the long rods. It was really quite fun as we were keeping the iron right on the surface and the Cudas would boil on the jig while many others were trying to eat the iron out of the hooked Cudas mouth. Great visual Cuda fishing. The Cuda were nice practice on the long rod for game fish in the near future. We released probably close to 40 San Quintin Cuda. It was howling, time was up and we headed in. We managed a fun day in tough conditions. Not game fish conditions.
Woke up on Saturday and fished out of San Quintin’s Pedro's Pangas on their smaller pangas as the others were all booked. The wind was there again. This day I fished with Dan Waddell (Ghetto Booty) and Steve which was a blast. We made bait fast. Headed to the front side of San Martin and slow trolled Greenies in ugly dirty water. Didn't look promising so we decided to fish Bass in the bush again. We picked up a few bass on Greenies and Spaniards and Fat Baits. We also had WO monster White Fish in the shallows again.
The wind started to howl between 20-30 knots around 9:30am and the conditions were very poor. The Bass were not biting very well so we decided to fish Cod in the afternoon. The captain kept on backing up so it was some what fishable in the wind. Caught some Lings, Rojo's, Starrys, etc on 7" Fat Baits and squid. Called it a day and headed in.
Sunday I fished with Dennis (Killstick) and Nate Smith for a half day as we needed to leave early so my bros could catch their flight out of SD. The wind finally laid down for our half day and it only blew around 5-8 knots but I believe it picked up a lot after we left. We fished very close to the San Quintin bay and we picked up a few nice Calicos and a lot of Sandies most on Swim Baits. We tested our new Jiggle Butter formula for the Fat Baits and they swim very well and indeed jiggle.
We wanted to fish Halibut for our last 45 minutes and Dennis is just a super gnarly fisherman. He got one 22lb class Halibut and 1 18lb class Halibut within 5 minutes of each other. He knows exactly were to stick em right in the gut pouch and they just lie dormant when you stick em there. He likes to gaff those fish so much he had me bring in both flatties towards the end of the battle and I got a few sizzles, whoooohoooo. He got both of them on 15lb. We had to leave the Flatties bitting and headed in.
Here's a helpful hint for the border crossing. When you get to the border muscle your way to the far far right lane or just have your copilot ask cars if you can change lanes until someone cool lets you. That is the lane that most of the time turns into 2 lanes at the end. The far right lane has always gone much faster for me as the other lanes. Get to the far right lane and you will move much faster then all the other lanes. At least for me every time.
We had EXTREMELY tough San Quintin conditions to fish in. Lots of wind and super dirty water. We did put together days on all 3 and had a blast. Great crew lots of laughs and ball busting. I will head back down soon as I really like that fishery and I am looking for ideal conditions next trip. I love fishing with the Booty crew.”
