BOAT SPORTFISHING SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS

June 13, 2004, Pete Hillis, Pedro’s Pangas, San Quintin, Baja fishing, Mexico:

Boat safety weight limits: For the safety of boaters, three plus a captain on the regular-sized pangas. A cabin cruiser like the Pelicano, four plus captain. Other larger boats, 5 maybe 6, plus captain.

This week our San Quintin landing only had six boats out. All San Quintin boats opted for bottom fish with limits of large rock cod and large ling cod. Our anglers fished the 240 spot for the nice catch they landed.

Hector, captain of the Romey, was a guide for a private boat from San Diego and fished the island and San Ramon, just north of the island for nice yellowtail, 18 to 20 lbs., calico and sand bass and 2 white seabass (the largest weighing in at 30 lbs).

San Quintin has been overcast with mild winds in the mornings, warming up to the high-70's by 11:00 a.m. to noon. The winds have been picking up in the evenings, but thankfully die down overnight for beautiful mornings. San Quintin water temps remain at 60 degrees. No San Quintin reports of any boats going out for the albacore this week.
