HEAVY YELLOWTAIL COUNTS AT SAN QUINTIN 240 SPOT
July 1, 2004, Capt. Kelly Catian, El Capitan Sportfishing, San Quintin, Baja sportfishing, Mexico:
Ok, We hit the 240 again yesterday and scored big with 18 San Quintin yellowtail averaging about 30 lbs. Me, Chris, Austin and the Froggies crew from Pacific Beach, Steve Massey and Cullin. Fish were caught on live bait drifting on the rock. The big tails were slamming the big salami macks and then freight-training to the bottom to try and bust you off. The guy got 18 out of 24 total hook-ups with a few fish leaving us wondering how big they were.
Getting pinned to the rail and then stripped and busted off on line up to 60 lbs!!!! Nothing you can do, just button down and hold on. Today Chris went on his boat with the Froggies crew to look for whiteseabass, i,ll let you know what happens. I'll be out again tomorrow so stay tuned.

San Quintin Yellowtail has been real good on the 240 lately with some fish in the high 30,s. On sat,26 I had Robert Claproth and Kids out for some inshore fishing on the reefs as he wasn,t really intersted in the albacore. We slow trolled the 240 rock for yellows and got 6 in the 25-26lbs range,we busted a few off too.Note: The American Angler was keeping the fish up with their bait and although they got shut down by Local pangeros all trolling off their stern, they did pretty good.....Thanks On Monday close family freind Chris Pierce, myself,my sons George"el Pajaro" and Christian also my two nephews Travis and Khol from"el otro lado" went out to the 240 for some slugs. The kids had never pulled on big tails before and i wanted them to get their &%$%$·,s kicked. We pulled up onto the rock without even slowtrolling. As soon as the kids got their baits out it was on!!!! We ended up with 9 San Quintin yellowtail from 25 to 37lbs the largest being landed by my sons "Pajaro" y Christian trading off on the pissed fish and keeping it off the 80 ft bottom.
On Wed, Me Chris and our freind Austin went out to the rock and right in the middle of a 1/2 dozen other boats that were trolling , we dropped the pick and started brailing bait, within seconds line was screaming and we were on!!!! We had wide open yellows boiling off the stern all day. We were getting worked by the bigger fish, many busting us off in one "kamikazi"run for the bottom. at 9:30 am we had 13 fish in the boat, my hands were shaking and Austin was all bruised up somehow. We were usuing mostly 50lbs gear and still getting just destoyed!!!! the average size was about 27 lbs the biggest was 33lbs. Water is 64-66 at the rock and blue. weather was overcast and clearing in afternoon. White seabass are around again too.
