HUNGARIAN ANGLERS FISH WITH PEDRO'S PANGAS
Aug. 8, 2004, Pete Hillis, Pedro's Pangas, San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico:
I wanted to write a special note this week. By far, this is the farthest that we have had someone travel to go fishing with us. Josef Szigeti from Irvine arranged to stay at San Quintin's Old Mill Hotel with friends, Istvan Matus, Peter Matus, and Laszlo Revesz who are from Budapest, Hungary. This would be their first fishing experience ever.
On their first day of San Quintin fishing, as they boarded the Romey with Captain Hector, they turned to us and said, "Today, we practice--tomorrow, we're experts!"
We all laughed and watched as the Romey went into the bay. Well the laugh was on us. When they returned that day, they had landed a 62-lb white seabass and according to Captain Hector, had farmed three other large white seabass.
They also had limits of sandies and calicos with a few rockcod and white fish.
On their 2nd day of San Quintin fishing, they fished the island for near limits of yellowtail (15 to 20 lbs) and log barracuda. So much for beginners luck! These guys were really good people.
In general, we had 30 San Quintin fishing boats out this week. One of the boats that fished the island did well on yellowtail and barracuda. The boats that fished Socorro got white seabass (18 to 20 lbs) with limits of sandies and calicos.
Air temps at San Quintin were hot this week (most days between mid-80's and mid-90's). On a few days, we hit 100. According to the captains, the water temps are cooling off for some reason (68 degrees).
