TWO DAYS OF FISHING WITH CAPTAINS JAIME AND DAVID
August 6, 2004, Don Fagan, San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico fishing:
Went out two days in San Quintin. Wed. Oscar Guzman and I went out early with Jaime Garcia of Jaimes' Sportfishing in his Skipjack.
We went to a spot Jaime knows six miles down the coast from the mouth of San Quintin bay about 1 1/2 miles off the coast and got limits on rock cod, cabrilla, whitefish with a few lings and barracuda, and two yellowtail one of which went 24lbs. Using squid and cut fillet for bait, and jigging with irons and Crippled Herring.
San Quintin was overcast in the morning, don't know the water temp.
Thurs. morning we went out with David, I can't remember his last name, who works with Pedros' Pangas. We went out in a 24ft panga and between the price on the boat and the pangero this is the good deal in SQ! $200 for the boat, fish 3 people comfortably, good radio and fish finder, the captain has a gps and years working the water around there.
We went out of San Quintin about 3 miles down the coast from the mouth of the bay and bottom fished the first part of the morning, got a mixed bag with a few nice size cabrilla. About 9:30 the bite kinda fell off and we decided to troll around a little. We trolled with rapala 18s, blue mullet pattern and green mullet. Immediately got two hookups, and had two fish on just about all the time for the next two hours. Didn't NOT have a fish on for a while. The whole time we stayed in the same general area we had bottom fished in earlier.
About 11 the wind started kicking up, and by noon it looked like a good idea to get off the water. The pangero is a good guide and a good deckhand. Some of the pangeros have a set idea about what to do, but this guy is amenable to anything. Not reluctant to burn fuel looking for fish or trolling, and a good boat handler as well. Some guys drive the hell out of their boats which does not make for a comfortable day of fishing, but this guy was very conscious of our comfort, which I like.
