SMALL YELLOWFIN TUNA IN WIDE-OPEN NUMBERS

Oct. 3, 2004, Capt. Kelly Catian, K&M Offshore Sportfishing, San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico:

On Friday Me, Chris Pierce and Dave "Browner" Brown went out to the San Quintin 240 spot hoping to get into some big yellows and we did get more than a few.

We went on the "OFFSHORE III" and left the San Quintin dock at 5:30, made bait and were pulling up the boil on the rock at 6:30 sharp. As soon as we made our first pass at the reef Browner was picked up on a slow-trolled mack on 40 lb. We dragged the fish a little to get it out in deeper water when Pierce got hammered. I shut the boat down and got a bait out on the slide and got picked up not 20ft from the stern. We got Browner's fish to the boat, a nice 23-25 lbs. Chris wasn't so lucky as his fish dogged for the bottom stripping Chrises 40lb rig like nothing. He got SMOKED! I got my fish in and we started for another pass. We would get bit on the drift as well but we were getting our a___ kicked by these fish, it was sick. After we were out of bait and our gear all destroyed we called it a day. It was 11 a.m. We had 6 San Quintin yellows on board. We lost at least 10. The other San Quintin fishing boats in the fleet were getting 5 lbs fish on paddies outside and some small football yellowfin.

Water at the 240 was 67-68 degrees. There was a small swell out of the west the wind was 5-10 knots. San Quintin weather was warm and sunny.

Sept. 27, 2004, Capt. Kelly Catian, K&M Offshore Fishing, San Quintin Fishing:

The Tuna are Wide Open at 8 miles out of San Quintin on a 240 degree heading. The yellowfin tuna are small with some fish to 15 lbs but still fun on light tackle. The white seabass continue to show south of San Quintin but it seems to be slowing down a little. There were hundreds of barracuda and bonita that would eat anything that hit the water so it was almost impossible to get you jigs out without getting a !"%$&? slime-stick or a giant bonita.

Yellows at the 240 ( yeah, the big guys) has been good also. San Quintin fishing water is back up to 70 degrees so look for more fish moving into the inshore reefs like the 6 fathom and Ben's Rock as well as the 240 and 15 spots.

San Quintin fishing weather has been excellent with no wind and warm temps all day and night. Wind has been absent(and can stay that way) water temps are: 67 degrees on the beach 70 degrees+ offshore. There has been a mixed swell out of the west and south, nothing significant.
