BIG BARRACUDA AND BONITA AT
EL TRANQUILLO AND ARROYO HONDO

Sept. 27, 2004, Julio Meza, San Quintin fishing, Baja California, Mexico:

I got back to San Quintin waters after fishing several Baja destinations, this time with my good friends Enrique Melero, Pepe Porragas, and Conrrado Gonzalez who wanted to try for White Sea Bass.

We fished south of San Quintin between Tranquillo and Arroyo Hondo but the giant cudas and big bonitas did not give any chance for the rest of the species.

We worked the birds, but with the same results. While trolling Rapalas around the kelp we landed 20 pound yellowtail and by noon we were in the middle of a huge shoal of white seabass between 20 to 30 pounds. Using chrome blue iron jigs mostly this time we landed 6 beautiful croakers.

We were 8 miles south from San Quintin point, heading 120, water temp 63, green dirty water, flat seas, 60 to 70 feet deep. In the morning it was cloudy and the action slow, but when the sun showed up the curbinas went crazy.

Off shore most San Quintin fishing boats landed limits of yellowfin tuna 8 to 10 pounds fishing just 8 miles out of La Punta and small yellowtail on kelp paddies.
