The rain stopped on Thursday night so Chris and I decided to go out for some Halibut. We did a few drifts with no luck and headed south of San Quintin about 4 miles to El Pabellon.
We got into lots of big bonita and barracuda as soon as we started throwing iron. Some drifts would produce almost all sandbass and calico bass, others would be mostly sandbass with a few calicos mixed in (lots of big ones).
We spotted a couple free swimming yellowtail and white seabass and I brailed some baits and threw a flylined mack out. The yellow slammed it on 25lb. We kept it out of the kelp (it was about 18lbs).
Then we got on a monster drift for wide open grumpy sandies and calicos. Chris got hammered on the drop and we knew it was a white (about 20). We threw back A LOT of bass after limiting on larger fish. We probably caught and released at least 100 fish that day and ended up with two whites and a yellow.
There were literally miles of bait, fish, and bird schools between Soccoro and San Quintin's La Pinta hotel. One drift was well over an hour of consistent action on mostly larger bass on jigs. Water was very warm at 67 degrees and blue. Very probable that the 240 and other high spots are holding yellows right now. San Quintin fishing weather is great today, sunny and no wind at 11:00 am. Probably will go out tomorrow to check things out. This whole week should be really good for yellows and white seabass. Nows the time, it's ON!!!

Yesterday morning as me and Chris were readying the boat to go out for a pull on some yellows, San Quintin weather started getting weird. Within an hour or so it was dumping. We found a couple of "lakes" that weren't here yesterday but got no bites at either. Water was brown and muddy 51 degrees. Lake and stream charters currently booked up....sorry.

Sea conditions were calm but on the cold side at 64 degrees. Wind was calm also.
Over the weekend San Quintin weather calmed down and warmed up a little. I had Ron & Mark Mayeda and their friend Chris Hendrikson. We went straight to the 240 on the first day and got into some great yellowtail action on the slow-troll and on the drift. We ended up with 9 yellows ranging from 15 to 25 lbs.
Oscar and the kids were also out the same day with Chris Peirce. They were at the rock also and the kids were getting "smoked" by the bigger yellowtails. They managed to land 3 fish and then went for rockcod.
After things slowed down a bit at the rock we went over to the 6 fathom and looked around for yellows. We found one spot on the edge of the reef and sent some baits deep with 2 ounce sliders. Chris Hendrikson got picked up on the drop by something big on his 60 lbs gear and could not stop it.
Next day, San Quintin fishing was much slower. We went everywhere and ended up drifting in the bay for halibut and managed to scratch up a nice 20 lbs flattie.
