MEDIUM SIZED YELLOWTAIL CAUGHT ON MACKEREL BAITS

Oct. 25, 2004, Capt. Kelly Catian, K&M Offshore Sportfishing, San Quintin fishing, Baja California, Mexico:

Went out on Sunday to try the 240 rock after checking SST images (sea surface temperature). Chart showed 67-68 degree water in close on the 240. We (me and Chris) got a fat tank of macks and got out on the rock by 7:00 a.m. We had it all to ourselves for an hour before anyone else showed up!!! We started out slow-trolling macks and every time we'd pass the reef we'd get picked up; the yellowtail were medium-sized ones 18 to 20-plus. We also got some on drifts. After landing 5 yellows (enough for tonight's feast at Tiburon's) we went for some bottom fish, lingcod and reds mostly. We got some really nice Lings in the 20-pound size.

San Quintin water temp was 67-68 degrees on the rock; wind was out of the west at 7-8 knots. Sky was clear.
