FISHING AT ESTERO DE COYOTE IS STERILIZED BY MEXICAN
COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN EXCEPT FOR ONE GOOD CHANNEL

April 29, 2005, Doug Pierson, Estero de Coyote, Baja California, Mexico Fishing Report:

After three net-free years, the Baja commercial netters returned to Estero de Coyote and are still at work. For the most part the estero is now sterilized. For some reason, one deep channel, 1/2 mile long by 50 yards wide, seemed untouched by the netting and in that one channel fishing was still superior: Big spotted bay bass of 2-3 pounds with a couple grande 4 pounders; Barred sand bass were on the small side; The prize was a Pacific Porgy of 8 pounds. The only porgy I have caught in the estero and the only porgy I have caught anywhere of that size; No broomtail groupers.

Trolling lures was completely unproductive and all fish were taken fishing the bottom with cut jack smelt for bait. As usual at Estero de Coyote, the water was full of sea weed. The winds howled incessantly and for only 3 hours a day were the tides high enough to float the little Gregor.
