SOLMAR'S CAPT. ANTONIO ROMERO IS TOP
SKIPPER OF THE WEEK WITH 13 STRIPED MARLIN RELEASES

Oct. 13-19, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja Calfornia Sur, Mexico:

The total catch by Solmar fleet's Cabo San Lucas sportfishing boats this week included 37 stripers (24 released), 13 blue marlin (nine released), 47 yellowfin tuna and 42 dorado.

Oklahoma angler Richard Gunderson, and Robert Carlson of Chicago, may not realize how their one-day catches brought forth many memories of how great Cabo San Lucas marlin fishing can be at times. Gunderson's one-day Cabo San Lucas catch of four striped marlin - each released - plus eight yellowfin tuna and seven dorado to 42 pounds taken on the El Torito off Punta Gorda, certainly brought to mind days when four-marlin-a-trip catches were the norm at Cabo San Lucas. He used a duke's mixture of baits that included live mackerel and sardines, along with a combination of red and yellow and black and purple lures. Carlson's catch and release of two blue marlin, along with 12 yellowfin tuna, all on live mackerel, at the Gordo Banks this past week also was exceptional. He fished aboard the Solmar.

Randy C of Kansas City had an exceptionally good outing by today's standards in catching a 234-pound blue marlin, eight yellowfin tuna and five dorado at the Faro Viejo. He fished the Solmar III. All his fish were taken on live mackerel and sardines.

One also might add the catch of two blues, both released, along with six dorado by Richard and Ron Scur of San Diego to that special yesteryear list. They made their catch from the Solmar IX off Punta Palmilla.

Jeffrey Johnson of Denver fished the Solmar I and used live mackerel and a purple and black lure in taking his billfish, plus four dorados, off the Golden Gate Bank.

The Cerro Colorado area produced a single striper and four dorado weighing between 20 and 35 pounds for P. Hernandez of Dix Hills, N.Y. All his fish were taken on live mackerel fished from the San Lucas VI.

Kenny Diare of Temecula, CA, boated seven Cabo San Lucas dorado on live bait while fishing the San Lucas IV off Chileno Bay.

Top Solmar Fleet skipper award for the week was Antonio Romero of the El Torito, whose passengers in six outings caught 13 striped marlin, of which nine were released, 26 yellowfin tuna and 14 dorado.
