ROOSTERFISH CATCH WHILE SURF FISHING
WITH A RANGER LURE AT SOLMAR BEACH
June 20, 2004, Chris Llewellyn, Solmar Beach surf fishing, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
I caught that rooster June 15th in the surf near the end of the Hotel Solmar beach that leads to Lover's Beach. I used 20 pound Ande line with a 70lb. leader and a Ranger. I scraped all the paint off to make it white. The reel is a Pen 1850SS and matching rod. Took about an hour to land this fish in front of a crowd from the resort.
The first few days of fishing while staying in Cabo San Lucas were kind of slow. Caught a bunch of little jacks.
Then I noticed a mullet some seagulls were picking at. I had just switched over from Rangers to fishing with squid for pompano and had caught a beauty, so I stuck the mullet on too small of a hook, but what the heck, and flipped it out into the waves.
I was caught offguard by something really big that grabbed the mullet so instead of free-lining the bait I tried to set the hook imediately. The fish swam slowly away and after about twenty yards or so the line went limp.
I reeled in to find a neatly cut in half mullet. Was probably one of the sharks I'd been seeing.
Then I started using pieces of the same mullet for bait. Right in the middle of the day with every cast I was catching big jacks!
Big like 15 plus pounders. I couldn't hardly believe it.
My arms were actually getting tired. With my last piece of bait I caught a 20lb+/- barred pargo. An absolutely beautiful fish. What a way to end that day. Even caught dinner! All other fish were released.
