BLUE MARLIN MAKE A GOOD SHOWING
AMID CABO SAN LUCAS STRIPERS
July 16, 2004, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet Cabo San Lucas striped marlin fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
A steady bite on striped marlin was spiced a bit this past week with a good show of blue marlin, plus excellent catches of dorado, Cabo San Lucas's favorite small gamefish.
Chris Hicks of Toledo, Iowa, fishing aboard the San Lucas V off San Jose del Cabo, released the two striped marlin he caught, in what he described was "an awesome" experience.
One of the larger Cabo San Lucas blue marlin -- a 298-pounder -- was taken by California angler Ed Wofford on live mackerel off Faro Viejo. He fished the Solmar II.
Two others who scored on blue marlin were Dit Wenz of Mission, Tex., and Mike Wheeler of Los Angeles, Calif. Wenz was especially proud of the 185-pound blue he caught from the Cabo San Lucas’ Solmar II at the Faro Viejo. "I've fished all over the world, so believe when I say these (Solmar) are world class guides and fishing mates," Wenz acknowledged in praising the Solmar II crewmates. Wheeler fished the San Lucas VI to take his blue marlin, along with a pair of jacks, on the San Lucas VI at the Gordo Banks.
Single striped marlin Cabo San Lucas fishing catches were made by John Almquist of Tucson, Ariz., and Daniel Arroyo of Sylmar, Calif. Almquist also added a single dorado to his take, fishing off the 95 Bank on the Solmar IV. Arroyo caught his striper off the Las Destilladeras aboard the San Lucas VI.
Captain of the week honors went to Antonio Romero of the Solmar II with five stripers, two blue marlin, 10 dorado and seven yellowfin tuna in four outings.
Total catch for the week by the Cabo San Lucas Solmar fleet in 49 outings included 36 striped marlin, 20 released, six blue marlin, four released, 28 yellowfin tuna, 66 dorado and 14 skipjack.
