ENORMOUS BLACK MARLIN WEIGHED AT 1,110 POUNDS IS
LANDED BY THE CABO SAN LUCAS SPORTFISHING BOAT QUIEN SABE
July 16, 2004, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
The largest billfish ever recorded from Cabo San Lucas was taken aboard the charter sportfisher, "Quien Sabe", crewed by skipper Lino & Mate Manuel, fishing above and outside the Gordo Banks. Angler Ryan Rupprecht, North Kingstown, RI, captured his trophy 1110 lb. black marlin, following a 6 hour battle on 50 lb. test line.
This fish bested the old Cabo San Lucas record of an 1,100-pound blue marlin, taken by angler Mike Stevenson, Oceanside, CA, while fishing aboard the Gaviota II, back in April 1995. This fine trophy has been the talk of Cabo San Lucas all week.
Reflecting on the remainder of the week, it was slow on anglers but the action remained fairly consistent with most Cabo San Lucas boats reporting 1-2 billfish per boat day.
Fish Cabo reporting for 2 days released a small, 250 lb. blue marlin and 1 striper, while the "Juanita VIII", reporting for 5 days, released 1 small blue marlin about 275 lbs., along with 4 stripers and a skipjack.
Gaviota Fleet reported 21 fishing days reflecting catches of 7 stripers released, 1 wahoo, 19 yellowfin tuna and 15 dorado.
Cabo San Lucas Climate: Warm & humid, some rain in early week, temps from 70's to high 90's, partly cloudy conditions persists.
Cabo San Lucas Sea conditions: Calm to moderate, with some squall & wind conditions.
Best Fishing Area: Out to the south of Cabo Falso.
Best Lure/Bait: Live bait was by far the best for the billfish.
