CABO SAN LUCAS SPORTFISHING BOATS LANDING
BLUE MARLIN AND STRIPED MARLIN IN ABUNDANCE
July 23, 2004, Nancy Chaloner, Pisces Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing:
BILLFISH: A magnificent week for those who were here in Cabo San Lucas fishing! It was quite the mixed bag for billfish with an abundance of both blue marlin and striped marlin being caught, there was also a considerable increase in the number of sailfish as well.
The Langevin family from Binghamton, New York looked like old pro's aboard the Valerie with a total of 2 striped marlin and 1 blue marlin caught and released on their day out.
Jack Cirino from Lake Forest California and fishing partner Andrew Chase had a Cabo San Lucas triple as well, but this time with sailfish, all were successfully released as well.
Cabo San Lucas fishing had looked like it was moving closer to the cape mid-week but the majority of the fish seem to be in the Punta Gorda area as the Pacific remains a good ten degrees cooler. A couple of boats did well on the 95 spot but bad weather to the south of us has caused some pretty big swells and winds remain fairly strong.
Those who managed to hang on such as Adam, Delia and Donald Kwasman from Tucson kept busy with their three striped marlin with Ricardo on the 28 ft Adriana. No BIG fish stories this week to report, I am still scratching my head ( or should I say my eyes) on the last one.
Pisces anglers caught a total of sixty-seven striped marlin, five blue marlin and seven sailfish this week, our overall success rate was ninety-four percent
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado and tuna were almost even this week as far as the fish count goes but the tuna definitely out weighed the dorado. Patrick McGrath from Fullerton, California caught an eighty pound yellow fin aboard the Tracy Ann, and the Ruthless kept Matt Parmeter hopping with ten smaller tuna both boats were working the 95 spot.
The dorado were spread out between Cabo San Lucas and Punta Gorda, Enrique Martinez and the Karina was the dorado boat of the week with a total of thirty two fish between twenty five and fifty pounds. Only one wahoo was caught this week aboard the forty foot Libre, the angler was Raymond Andre from Donlestown, PA, Bon Apetit Ray!
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Even though the weather channel called for rain all week we never saw a drop at Cabo San Lucas, just large clouds off in the distance. There were some spectacular electrical storms in the Sea of Cortez that lit up the evening sky but that is as close as we came to any weather. The days have been extremely hot and muggy but the nights have remained cool. Seas have been calm in the mornings with the wind typically picking up around noon to 12 16 knots , seas have been two to six feet.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: Sea of Cortez, 84F 89F, Pacific 74F 80F
BEST LURES: Live bait a must for all the striped marlin, plugs and feathers on the tuna.
