FISHING TRIP PRODUCES THREE BLUE
MARLIN FOR SOLMAR FLEET BOAT SOLMAR III
Aug. 4, 2004, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico Fishing:
The top individual blue marlin catch of the Cabo San Lucas summer season thus far of three blue marlin, one exceeding 400 pounds, and one striped marlin was made last week by veteran Los Angeles angler Gino Mangini. Mangini fished the Punta Gorda area aboard the Solmar II. Live mackerel was his bait of choice. He released two of those blues.
The marlin bite for both blues and stripers remains steady.
And with increasing water temps at Cabo San Lucas, the numbers of dorado being caught continues to improve.
Shawn Murphy of Quitman, LA, tapped the San Jose Bank for four dorado and five yellowfin tuna, fishing the Solmar IV.
Chehalis, Wash. angler Jim Guenther found lots of Cabo San Lucas dorado at the 95 Bank, where he kept five -- all taken on mackerel -- aboard the San Lucas IV.
The Faro Viejo area near Cabo San Lucas also provided cooperative tuna and dorado for Chris James on the Solmar II and Gary Saywite on the San Lucas IV.
James, of Norwalk, Calif., boated three yellowfin and two dorado.
Saywite, of Newport Beach, Calif., put four tuna on the San Lucas' deck.
Four dorado averaging 25 pounds provided "a great day" of Cabo San Lucas fishing off Las Destiladeras for Jake Brydon of Austin, Tex., aboard the Solmar II.
Bruce Kevin, who hails from Escondido, Calif., found a similar bite at the Gordo Banks, taking two dorado and one yellowfin while fishing the San Lucas VI.
Captain of the week honors went to Armando Luna of the San Lucas IV, who in five outings accounted for four striped marlin, 19 dorado and seven yellowfin.
Total catch for the week by the Cabo San Lucas Solmar charter boat fleet in 56 outings included 11 striped marlin, four released, eight blue marlin, five released, released, 53 yellowfin tuna, 41 dorado and 12 skipjack.
