SOLMAR CHARTER BOATS LANDING
DORADO INTO THE 50-POUND CLASS
Sept. 17-22, 2004, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing:
The catch of 16 striped marlin, two blue marlin and a host of big, bull dorado during the past week, shows Cabo San Lucas fishing is on the mend after successive hurricanes left sloppy seas and a few rain showers.
Canadians Frank Venwalleghen and Cathy Bennell of Wirehose, Ontario, fished the Morro Prieto where they caught and released a pair of Cabo San Lucas sailfish weighing 80 and 120 pounds, plus one dorado which they kept. They fished aboard the San Lucas VI.
John Brummer and Steve Daniel of Stillwater, Okla., found an outstanding bite on big dorado, taking eight weighing from 35 to 45 pounds, and another of 80 pounds, while releasing a single wahoo, fishing Cabo San Lucas' Pacific side. All of their dorado were taken on a trolled green lure by the crew of the San Lucas VI.
Dorado weighing from 30 to 55 pounds bit both lure and live mackerel for Ken Moorhead of Trabuco Canyon, Calif. He fished the nearshore area off Punta Gorda on the Solmar.
Huntington Beach, Calif. anglers Fred Clark, Jeff McDonald, Mark Rose and Matt Dennison, on their first trip, shared in boating seven dorado to 20 pounds on lures, fishing from the Solmar II off San Jose del Cabo. That prompted a second Cabo San Lucas fishing outing, this one aboard the Solmar III working the west side of the Old Lighthouse, where they added four more dorado to their take, these weighing 20 to 40 pounds.
Dorado were the menu for Jeremy Wen of Oakland, Calif., and William McCord of Wylie, Tex. Wen took two weighing 40 and 50 pounds fishing the Faro Viejo Bank on the Solmar VII. McCord also took a pair weighing 20 and 45 pounds at the Old Lighthouse aboard the San Lucas IV.
Captain of the week honors went to Javier Abaroa of the Solmar II, who in six Cabo San Lucas fishing outings produced six striped marlin, 15 doroado, 13 yellowfin tuna and three wahoo.
Total Cabo San Lucas catch by the Solmar fleet included 16 striped marlin, seven sailfish, two blue marlin released, three wahoo, one released, 52 yellowfin tuna, 17 skipjack and 56 dorado.
