FANTASTIC DORADO FISHING WEEK AT CABO PRODUCES
99 PERCENT OVERALL CATCH RATE FOR PISCES FLEET
Sept. 24-30, 2004, Tracy Ehrenberg, Pisces Fleet, Cabo San Lucas fishing report, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Our overall Cabo San Lucas catch success rate for all species combined was a whopping 99%, (sorry to the people aboard the one boat that got skunked), however the number of charters that got billfish was a bit on the low side at 23%.
It was a fantastic dorado week though, keeping everybody busy.
Still, there were some good catches of billfish at Cabo San Lucas. Eric McCrea fishing aboard "Ensueno" on September 24th, hooked up to a black marlin just four miles off of the Old Lighthouse, the fish estimated at 400 lbs was released after an hour and half.
September 26th, was the best day this period; "Valerie" released an approximate 300 lb blue marlin and boated three dorado and three yellowfin tuna, for Lewis Patrick from Scottsdale, Arizona.
"Rebecca" also released a nice blue and a couple of dorado for Dennis Llond from Pleasanton, Ca.
"Ruthless" had a mixed bag this day with one sailfish released, one wahoo, four dorado & five tuna. "Andrea' a 28 ft boat, had the best overall day with one striped marlin and two sailfish released four dorado and one tuna.
Practically all of the fishing at Cabo San Lucas was on the Pacific from the Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate.
Pisces anglers caught a total of six striped marlin, two blue marlin, one black marlin and fifteen sailfish, all released.
Dorado continues to reign in Cabo San Lucas, with 87% of charters hooking fish in the 15 to 50 lb class, with the average fish around 20 lbs, catches ranged from one to twelve fish per boat, with the average being four fish. They were found over a widespread area and took both lures and bait with equal voracity - total dorado count for us was 287, with smaller fish released.
Yellowfin tuna catches were slower with 29% of Cabo San Lucas fishing boats landing fish of football size, 15 to 25 lbs. Some were larger; John Ryaharde fishing aboard "Valerie" 30miles off the old lighthouse, landed five, ranging from 20 to 120 lbs.
This was the best Cabo San Lucas wahoo week we've had so far this year - 16% of boats caught fish from 25 to 70 lbs. On September 27th, Greg Wahl and friends landed three around the 40 lb mark, as well as 5 dorado, aboard "Ruthless". Inshore pangas caught skipjacks and some dorado.
It is cooler than usual for this time of year, with nights becoming fresh. Skies are clear and seas mostly calm, with some whitecaps in the afternoons late n the week.
BEST LOCATION: Jaime Bank, Golden Gate, Migrino, Pozo de Cota., Old Lighthouse.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 79-80 on the Pacific, 82 F in the Cortez.
