BLUE MARLIN AND STRIPED MARLIN
LEADING OFFSHORE FISHING ACTION AT CABO
Oct. 7-13, 2004, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Blue and striped marlin continue highlighting angling action in Cabo San Lucas fishing waters, catch reports by Solmar fleet skippers indicate.
Sterling, Alaska angler David Morris' catch aboard the San Lucas V represented a typical billfisher by taking a single striper, which he released, along with two dorado and one yellowfin tuna taken at Faro Viejo.
Right behind Morris was a single sailfish, three dorado and one yellowfin taken by John Wheelock of Bakersfield, Calif. He fished aboard the San Lucas IV at the 95 Spot.
Fifteen-year-old Nick Mitchell of Ocean City, N.J. demonstrated the kind of sportsmanship that made his dad, Mike Mitchell, mighty proud when the first marlin the lad caught was released six miles off Chileno Bay. They fished the Solmar, skippered by Javier Abaroa.
Tom Bennett of Prescott Valley, Ariz., bagged his striper in waters off Cerro Colorado while fishing from the San Lucas V.
John Thorn, William Greener and Mike Johnson concentrated on smaller game fish.
Thorn, of Alhambra, Calif., took a pair of dorado and three yellowfin fishing the Pozo Cota area aboard the Solmar III. Greener fished the Old Lighthouse to score four yellowfin and two dorado from the San Lucas VI.
Johnson, of Alta Loma, Calif., boated one dorado and eight yellowfin in less than an hour while fishing the Faro Viejo on the Solmar VI.
Javier Abaroa, skipper of the Solmar, won weekly honors for the three striped marlin, one blue marlin, 11 dorado and four jacks his passengers caught in four outings.
Total Cabo San Lucas catch for the week by the Solmar fleet in 76 outings, including releases, was 14 striped marlin, 23 skipjack, 34 yellowfin tuna, 55 dorado, four sailfish, four blue marlin and seven wahoo.
