FISHING ACTION SLIPS A LITTLE DURING THE FULL MOON PHASE
Oct. 22-28, 2004, Tracy Ehrenberg, Pisces Fleet, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Fishing was very good in Cabo San Lucas this week, that is nearly everybody got to pull something in, resulting in an overall catch success rate of all species combined of a little over 93 percent.
Cabo San Lucas marlin catches were just about right for this time of year at 46 percent.
Angler of the week was Joseph Angell, from Maryland, who whilst fishing board "Andrea" with wife Martha released a 400 lb blue marlin, two striped marlin and nine dorado.
On October 23rd, "Ruthless" also has a blue marlin a little smaller at around 200 lbs, as well as a hammerhead shark and a dorado.
Cabo San Lucas fishing was better at the beginning of this report, before the moon reached its full stage - on the 22nd; "Valerie" released three striped marlin, one sailfish and ten dorado for Chris Johnson and family. This same day Mike & Sheryl Denan from Florida were thrilled to release three striped marlin board "Tracy Ann" at the Golden Gate. Not to be outdone Matt Leslie and friends from Georgia also released three stripers, aboard "Adriana".
On October 28th, buddies Richard Sigman and John Segovia, were fishing aboard their long time favorite, "Adriana" when they hooked into a very strong fish, Richard huffed and puffed for over 20 minutes, while John reeled in dorado, they saw the shadow of a huge fish coming up from the depths, but to their surprise it turned out to be a large plastic bag, deftly hooked around the handles and filled with water - the most unusual catch Richard's ever had here!
All of the fishing was on the Pacific from Pozo de Cota to Golden Gate. Cabo San Lucas fishing stayed decent even during full moon, with just a slight drop off on marlin catches.
Pisces anglers caught a total of 41 striped marlin, 10 sailfish and two blue marlin, all released except two fish.
Dorado dominates in Cabo San Lucas right now with 81 percent of charters catching fish from 15 to 50 lbs, Pisces anglers hauled in a whopping 309 fish this week. The average catch was 3-5 per boat whilst others landed up to 10, found over a widespread area, taking both lures and bait.
We need to crank it up on the yellowfin tuna, with the Tuna Tournament just around the corner - just 17 percent of boats landed yellowfin this week and weights were from 15 to 40 lbs, but then again boats have been concentrating on marlin and dorado.
We had a couple of small hammerheads and one mako shark this week. Inshore it was mostly skipjack and small dorado.
LOCATION: Los Arcos to Golden Gate.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Unbelievably we had rain, that started last Friday and was intermittent through until late Monday, this disappointed a lot of people that had banked on our usual weather. This also caused rough seas on Monday, but those that stuck it out did well.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 81 F.
