Oct. 21-27, 2004, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing:
Billfish action in recent weeks, while not wide open by any count nevertheless remains consistent and is spiced by an excellent bite on dorado in all Cabo waters.
Typical Cabo San Lucas fishing, in that regard, was the catch by Lynn and Erick Kerecman of Elberon, N.J., while fishing aboard the San Lucas VI. They caught and released a striped marlin and many yellowfin tuna but kept the six dorado they boated. All their fish were taken on live mackerel off the Faro Viejo.
Houston, Tex. Angler Cy Bronssard experienced a wide open dorado show, taking 13 along with a single striper off the Old Lighthouse aboard the San Lucas VI.
The Cerro Colorado dished up a single striper and dorado to W. Laury of Edison, N.J., who fished the San Lucas V.
Don Ladenberg of Geneva, Ill. nailed a single striper on a black and orange lure trolled from the San Lucas VI off San Jose del Cabo.
Live mackerel produced a 41/2-foot long Cabo San Lucas wahoo and a pair of dorado for Anthony Perrota of Nanuett, N.Y. in waters off the Old Lighthouse. He fished the Solmar II.
A black-and-blue lure trolled from the Solmar III at the Faro Viejo rewarded Sacramento, Calif. angler Murray Allen with a pair of dorado.
Fellow Californian Jeff Gillman of Hope Valley used a green and yellow lure in taking four dorado and two yellowfin tuna while fishing from the Solmar O off San Cristobal.
Cabo San Lucas fishing captain of the week honors went to Mario Arballo of the Solmar IV, who in six outings produced three striped marlin, 32 dorado and 21 yellowfin tuna.
Total Cabo San Lucas catches including releases by Solmar fleet vessels were 12 striped marlin, four sailfish, two blue marlin, 136 dorado, 75 yellowfin tuna, six wahoo and five skipjack.
