MULTIPLE STRIPED MARLIN CATCHES SCORED BY
SOLMAR FLEET'S CABO SAN LUCAS CHARTER FISHING BOATS
Dec. 2-8, 2004, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja Sur, Mexico:
Striped marlin dominated Cabo San Lucas fishing activity this past week, highlighted by 17 caught by the Solmar III, and 54 by the rest of the Solmar fleet, as multiple catches of these scrappy billfish were quite common. Live mackerel has been the magic enticer this week at Cabo San Lucas.
Juan Luis and John of Romeo, Mich., were among the big scorers, bagging five Cabo San Lucas stripers - all on live mackerel - while fishing the El Torito off San Jose del Cabo.
The Cabo San Lucas fishing cruiser San Lucas VI also got in on the San Jose bite, dishing up a pair of stripers to Steve Schumaker of Show Low, Ariz. The San Lucas VI followed that outing with another at the Faro Viejo, where Jim Martin of Calif. caught his two marlin - one topping 140 pounds.
Texas angler David Breavy worked the Gordo Banks, where he nabbed a pair of stripers while fishing from the Solmar IX.
Lures of various colors also provided good results for both marlin and small game fish off the Faro Viejo. An orange lure worked well for Dennis Caggiano of Norwalk, Calif. in taking a 110-pound striper and a lone dorado, He fished the San Lucas V.
John Westerman of Farmington, NM, fishing aboard the Solmar IV, and Tim Shannon of St. Louis, MO. on the Solmar VII, also tapped the Faro Viejo for yellowfin tuna and dorado.
Westerman bagged a dozen dorado, and Shannon five tuna trolling a black and blue feather.
Skipper of the week honor went to Jose Cesena of the Solmar III whose Cabo San Lucas passengers caught 17 striped marlin, 11 dorado and 14 yellowfin tuna in five outings.
Total Cabo San Lucas sportfishing catch by the Solmar fleet for the week included 54 striped marlin, 23 yellowfin tuna, 76 dorado and 12 skipjack.
