SOLMAR SPORTFISHING CHARTERS
AVERAGE MORE THAN A MARLIN PER DAY
Jan. 28, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Cabo San Lucas striped marlin fishing this week was some of the best of the winter season thus far. Solmar fishing boats averaged more than a marlin per outing.
Our top catch was posted by the Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boat Solmar IX, which in four outings rewarded passengers with 11 striped marlin, all taken on live mackerel. Veteran Cabo San Lucas skipper Fernando Chan was named the Solmar fleet's captain of the week.
The San Lucas VI and Solmar III, also had one-day catches that included three marlin.
Seattle angler Ben Delise, aboard the San Lucas VI, took his three Cabo San Lucas marlin while fishing the Faro Viejo. Dostroph Thomas of Las Vegas, Nev., bagged his three stripers on the Solmar III at the Jaime Bank. Both anglers released all but one of their fish.
The Jaime Bank was also gave up two stripers to Pleasanton, Tex., angler Bob Price who fished the Cabo San Lucas cruiser, San Lucas VI.
Levi Martinez of Los Alamos, N.M., experienced his "greatest day fishing," taking his first billfish, a 120-pound striper, fishing the San Lucas IV off Cabo San Lucas' Old Lighthouse.
The small game fishing bite at Cabo San Lucas also was on the upswing, as reflected in the 10 yellowfin tuna tuna Tualatin, Ore., angler Jake Tieldemann caught at the Cerro Colorado while fishing the Solmar VII.
Forrester Gurney of Atlanta, GA found the 95 Spot good for a catch of five yellowfin and one dorado (mahi-mahi), while Robert Freese of Santa Rosa, Calif., reported similar luck in taking three dorado, topped by a 45-pounder, while working off San Jose del Cabo.
The total Cabo San Lucas fishing catch for the week in 50 outings by Solmar fleet vessels, including released fish, was 63 striped marlin, 54 yellowfin tuna, 33 dorado and 49 sierra.
