CABO SPORTFISHING CHARTERS AVERAGE ABOUT A
BILLFISH PER DAY THROUGH THE FULL MOON PHASE

March 4, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Even through the full moon, the Cabo San Lucas fishing boats were averaging a billfish per day and the high boat for the week was the "Gaviota VII", landing 9 striped marlin for 4 fishing days.

By the week's end, the water temperatures at Cabo San Lucas were falling again, dipping to a cool 66 degrees inshore and 70 offshore and to the southwest of Cabo San Lucas 12-20 miles.

The cooler fishing water is starting to wrap around the cape at Cabo San Lucas and move up into the Sea of Cortez, typical for March, but usually difficult for the anglers. I would probably guess that we will begin to see some swordfish, mako sharks and an increase of yellowfin tuna coming to the Cabo San Lucas fishing area together with the cooler waters.

Overall fishing counts for the Gaviota Fleet reflected 46 stripers, 40 released, 4 dorado, 22 yellowfin tuna and 2 skipjack for 42 fishing days at Cabo San Lucas. The "Fish Cabo", reporting for 1 offshore day and 1 inshore day reflected 1 striper released and 15 sierra. "Juanita VIII", also reporting for 2 fishing days reflected 4 stripers released, 2 yellowfin, (70-80 lbs.) and 1 dorado.

The Cabo San Lucas climate was mostly cloudy with air temperatures ranging from 58-80 degrees. Sea conditions at Cabo San Lucas were unstable, with cooling water temperatures that are changing almost daily, 66 inshore to 70 offshore. Best area for fishing at Cabo San Lucas was southwest of the Jaime Bank on the Pacific and outside Destiladeras on the Sea of Cortez side. The best fishing lure was mackerel colors in the artificials, but live bait was truly a necessary item, with much bait & switch going on. The live bait supply at Cabo San Lucas was mostly mackerel.
