CABO VACATION AREA SPORTFISHING
LULL BETWEEN MIGRATION PERIODS

April 1-6, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Cabo San Lucas vacation area fishing continues on the slow side, as sometimes is the case this time of year, between the productive fall and the hot summer when big blue marlin began their northerly migration from the tropics.

Top Cabo San Lucas sportfishing catch of the week by the Solmar fishing fleet was the take of five yellowfin tuna and one striped marlin by Chris Rosenthal of Boston, MS. He fished the Solmar III off the Gordo Banks. All the fish were taken on live mackerel.

Certainly not to be overlooked was Richard Young's catch of a single wahoo and a striped marlin taken off the 95 spot. The Reno, NV angler fished on the Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boat Solmar IV.

The biggest marlin of the week, a 150-pound striper, fell to a live mullet as bait, fished by Keith Keller of Shreveport, LA aboard the Solmar VII off the Faro Viejo.

Right behind his trophy catch at the same offshore bank was a 140-pound striper taken by Neil Robinson of Bellingham, WA, who fished the Cabo San Lucas boat San Lucas VI.

The three-member Cohoes family of Forest Lake, MN, also fished the Faro Viejo, taking turns in catching a single striper while fishing aboard the El Torito.

Chad Hopkins of North Dakota came away quite pleased in his first encounter with giant squid, catching nine of the hard-fighting cephalopods and a single yellowfin tuna at the Jaime Bank on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas. He was fishing on the Solmar Fleet boat San Lucas IV.

Live mullet did the dirty work in doing in three yellowfin by Cheryl and Brian Congram of San Diego, CA, while fishing from the San Lucas V at the San Jose Bank.

Skipper of the week honors went to Benito Peralta of the Solmar III. In five outings at Cabo San Lucas, his passengers responded with four striped marlin, 11 yellowfin tuna, two dorado and one wahoo.

Total catch in 62 outings by Solmar Fleet's Cabo San Lucas sportfishing boats during the past week, including released fish, was 14 striped marlin, 27 yellowfin tuna, 26 giant squid, 16 dorado and seven wahoo.
