STRIPED MARLIN GO ON FEEDING FRENZY
FOR SOLMAR FLEET BOATS FISHING OFF CABO
April 14-20, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Striped marlin went on a feeding frenzy at Cabo San Lucas this past week, during which 64 were caught and 42 released by Solmar Fleet, a catch rate more than five times that of the previous week's fishing.
The bite took place at nearly all the customary reefs and deep water locations in the Cabo San Lucas fishing area, with none reported better than any other.
Top catch was taken by Rita and Robert Wilcox of Snohomish, WA. The couple fished the Cabo San Lucas charter sportfishing boat San Lucas IV at the Jaime Bank, where they caught stripers weighing 140 and 163 pounds.
The Faro Viejo also gave up a pair of Cabo San Lucas stripers to Peter Codallos, son Peter III, and wife Jessica Codallos of Chula Vista, CA. They fished the Solmar III.
Michael Ralph of Belleview, WA, fishing from the Solmar, boated a 190-pound striper, plus three sierra and a lone dorado off Punta Palmilla, just northeast of Cabo San Lucas.
Berny Mackey gave special praise to the crew of the Solmar IV for their assistance in helping him boat a 152-pound striper and six yellowfin tuna. They fished of Punta Gorda.
Single striper catches also were reported by Craig Pearson of Byers, CO, and Trevor Falcon of Henderson, NV. Pearson fished El Torito off Pozo de Cota. Falcon caught his Cabo San Lucas marlin while fishing on the Solmar IV east of the Gordo Bank.
Small game fish were targeted by Stan Zissera of Marina del Rey, CA. He fished the San Lucas VI off the Gordo, taking four yellowfin tuna, two dorado and five sierra.
Solmar Fleet's top Cabo San Lucas sportfishing skipper for the week was Antonio Romero of the El Torito, who in six outings rewarded his passengers with 12 striped marlin, eight dorado, five sierra and three yellowfin.
The total catch by the Solmar charter fishing fleet, including releases, was 64 striped marlin, 21 yellowfin tuna, 14 dorado, 26 sierra and 2 wahoo.
