MARLIN FISHING REBOUNDS FOR CABO
BOATS AT THE CORTEZ SIDE GORDO BANKS
May 5-11, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Marlin fishing rebounded this past week at Cabo San Lucas, following a brief period of slow fishing in local waters.
The hot fishing took place at the Gordo Banks, where Steve Wolfe of Lebanon, Ore., took three stripers, all on live mackerel, in two days fishing aboard the Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boat Solmar IV.
Lures of various color combinations seemed to work as well as live bait during this week's action in the Cabo San Lucas vacation area, Solmar charter boat skippers said. In that regard, an orange and yellow jig worked quite well for Marg Looney of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, in catching a striped marlin while fishing the San Lucas VI off Punta Palmilla.
Mark and Nicole Lundquist of Ramsey, Wisc., shared in taking a 140-pound striped marlin, one dorado and a single black tuna on green and orange lures trolled behind the San Lucas IV off Punta Palmilla.
For Ontario, Canada, angler Garrett Crouch, mackerel was the enticement in taking four yellowfin tuna while fishing the Solmar off Pozo Cota.
Park City, Utah, couple Joe Wrona and Jeanie Rateliffe fished off Cabo San Lucas' Old Lighthouse, where they caught and released a striper and boated four yellowfin tuna in the 30-pound class fishing the El Torito.
Chris Owens of Corpus Christi, Tex., worked a black and purple lure off the east side of the Gordo Bank in taking a 130-pound striper on the El Torito.
Captain of the week honors went to veteran skipper Javier Abaroa of the Solmar II, who in six outings rewarded his passengers with eight striped marlin, seven yellowfin tuna, 17 dorado and 22 sierra.
The total Cabo San Lucas sportfishing catch for the week by the Solmar fishing fleet, including releases, was 56 striped marlin, 19 yellowfin, 29 dorado and 36 sierra.
